  5. Over the past few weeks I have received numerous requests for
  6. information regarding human factors experiments which were conducted
  7. in order to develop the Macintosh computer. This was in response
  8. to the question I had posted several weeks before. I am sending
  9. all of the e-mail I received related to this issue.

  11. I did find on my own some fairly good information, but it seems
  12. as though much of the Mac development was first of all based on
  13. the Xerox Star, and secondly not very emperically, but rather 
  14. based on common sense. One good information source containing some
  15. early Star experiments is "Readings in Human-Computer Interaction
  16. A Multidisciplinary Approach" by Ronald M. Baecker and William
  17. A.S. Buxton. This book contains, "Human Factors Testing in the
  18. Design of Xerox's 8010 Star Office Workstation" by William
  19. L. Bewley, Teresa L Roberts, David Schroit and William L. Verplank
  20. also "Designing the Star User Interface" by David Canfield Smith,
  21. Charles Irby, Ralph Kimball, Bill Verplank and Eric Harslem which
  22. was actually reprinted from Byte Magazine,v.7,n.4,April 1982.

  47. Talk Bulletin Board, Apple Human Interface folder.  Beyond that, check out the
  48. Macintosh programming newsgroup and the cognitive science newsgroups on USENET.

  50. through APDA, product # T0400LL/A.

  89.         Apple has done relating to it's Macintosh interface. I am aware

  147. Being a human-computer interaction researchers I must warn you to
  148. be aware that the guidelines put out by Apple are purely "this seems
  149. like a good way to do it" guidelines.  Their material has numerous
  150. references in the back but the majority of work is <not> backed up
  151. by any empiricial research.

  192.         While I know that this is a bit unorthodox for the net, I was also
  193. interested in the Mac-Human interface and when I read that there might
  194. actually be some research which has already been done, I wanted to search
  195. it out.  I was wondering if you would be willing to send me the information
  196. which you have already obtained on this subject.  If you feel that you cannot
  197. for any reason at all, I will understand but please reply in any case, as I
  198. would not want to bother you more than necessary.  Thank you for your time.
